Shoulder Rehabilitation

The shoulder is one of the most injured joints in the body

At Premier Physical Therapy in Omaha, NE, we know that the shoulder is one of the largest and most complex joints. The shoulder includes the clavicle (collarbone), scapula (shoulder blade), humerus (upper arm bone), and the ligaments and muscles that connect those bones. The humerus and the scapula fit together like a ball and socket. The shoulder allows a wide range of arm movement but also has to be stable enough that you can lift and pull heavy objects. The increased allowable motion and heavy use put the shoulder at risk of injury.

What shoulder conditions are treated with physical therapy?

All of our physical therapists are well-trained in all shoulder conditions from orthopedic to neurologic.
Here are some of the common conditions that physical therapy can treat:
  • Adhesive Capsulitis aka Frozen Shoulder
  • Rotator Cuff Tears and Surgical Repairs
  • Labral Tears and Surgical Repairs
  • AC Joint Sprain aka Separated Shoulder
  • Shoulder Impingement
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis
  • Snapping Scapula
  • Scapulohumeral Rhythm dysfunction

Shoulder Rehabilitation & Treatment Options

Our ultimate goal is to relieve your pain and return you to your prior level of function. We want you back doing the things you love whether that’s playing golf, back to work, playing with your children, or anything in between.

Common physical therapy treatment options include:

Range of Motion

It’s important to have a full range of motion in your shoulder to complete your daily tasks. Your therapist will examine you to determine any deficits or imbalances and identify the specific stretching exercises to restore your normal function.

Strengthening

Many of us develop weakness in our shoulders as we age. When a weakness or muscle imbalance develops in our shoulder this could lead to abnormal shoulder movements and/or irritation in the shoulder, causing pain. This is especially important for post-surgical patients. Your Physical Therapist will identify these weaknesses or imbalances and work to correct them.

Shoulder Stabilization

Having proper stability in the shoulder is just as important as strengthening. Lack of stability in your shoulder can lead to dislocations or abnormal excessive motions in the joint. This can cause bony damage, labral tears, and rotator cuff tears. This is especially important for athletes and heavy manual labor positions.

Postural Awareness and Movement Correction

Correct posture is very important for your shoulders. Abnormal postures and improper motion of the shoulder and shoulder blade can lead to increased wear and tear on the shoulder. This can cause such conditions as impingement, tendonitis, bursitis, and rotator cuff tears.
