I just had a great new patient this morning… I say “great” because it reminded me about an area of physical therapy that is unique because is (1) a very common complaint; AND (2) equally as commonly not treated.
Many adults (women more than men, but men also) will report “a little (urine) leakage” with laughing, sneezing, jumping and assume this is “just what happens after babies and just need to live with it.” Nope. Not true.
Yes, urinary leakage (stress incontinence ) is common after pregnancy and with age, but that does not mean that’s your new normal. Physical therapy does help.
The most common approaches are “external” for example: strengthening your core muscles, stretching the joints of the hips and low back, diet recommendations, and how to isolate your pelvic floor muscles. Patients often don’t seek treatment because they either don’t know what options are available and/or don’t want “internal” work.
Take home point: you don’t need to live with urinary incontinence any longer. Seek a physical therapist who is knowledgeable in treating this area.
