When you work with a lot of runners you begin to notice some trends throughout the running and shoe store world. One that has come to my attention is the concern for pronation during running. First off, lets set the record straight; pronation is a NORMAL motion that occurs during running. Pronation is only a problem for those who cannot control the magnitude or speed of pronation, or arches are collapsed and they are stuck in pronation. For these people, arch supports and stability or motion control shoes are appropriate. If you are able to control your pronation then neutral cushion shoes are for you.

Take home message: Pronation is not bad, only if you can’t control it. A Physical Therapist can help you determine your foot mechanics and what shoe will benefit your running style.
